Microcerotermes turneri

This is a highly destructive subterranean termite native to Australia.

Distribution

East coast of Australia from Townsville in northern Queensland to mid-coast the of New South Wales

Identification

Alates. Alates measure 9.00–10.25mm with wings, and 4.75–5.80mm without wings. 

  1. Head very dark brown
  2. Pronotum very dark brown;
  3. Postclypeus much lighter.
  4. Anteclypeus is hyaline (glassy and translucent) 
  5. Anterior half of the meso- and metanotum are light brown;
  6. Abdomen, as well as antennae and are darker.
  7. Pronotum with a pale coloured “+” in the median line
  8. Antennae has 14 segments;
  9. 3rd segment of antenna noticeably smaller and shorter, 4th and the following segments progressively increase in length.

  11. Wings are dark and smoky

Soldier caste. Soldiers are 4.75–5.75mm in length.

  1. Head orange to reddish-brown
  2. Labrum is parallel on the sides, and is orange to reddish-brown in colour;
  3. Labrum is bluntly pointed at the apex
  4. the first segment of the antennae is orange to reddish-brown; the rest of the segments are brownish-yellow
  5. Colour of the head is darkest anteriorly 
  6. Head is variable in size, slightly widened on the sides, with few hairs
  7. Mandibles black, moderately serrated, strongly curved, and shorter than head;
  8. Mandibles noticeably concave externally at the base
  9. Antennae has 13 segments;
  10. 3rd segment of antenna noticeably smaller than other segments
  11. 4th and 5th segment of antenna approximately equal in size; 6th – 13th segments slightly increase in length progressively
