Found in all states except the Northern Territory
Identification
Adults are 4–6 mm in length and have a slim grey thorax grey with three faint longitudinal stripes. Their most distinctive feature is their flying pattern.
Eggs are laid in batches of 50 in semi-liquid decaying organic matter. A single female can lay 200-600 eggs in her life span.
Larvae are about 1.5 mm long when newly hatched and 5–8 mm long when mature. Pale brown in colour, ovoid in shape with whip-like spines around the edges.
The pupal stage takes about 3–28 days.
