Order
Amphipoda
Distribution
Widespread in Australia
Identification
Adult Ampidopds range from 5–20 mm in length, but they are typically around 10 mm long. They are laterally flattened, with seven pairs of walking legs at the front and three pairs of small legs.
Behaviour
Terrestrial Ampidopds can be found in moist areas of gardens, often in decaying vegetative matter. They are often brought inside during wet weather on footwear.
Ampidopds as pests
Ampidopds are mostly just a nuisance. They easily get into homes but die right away due to lack of moisture. They can also clog pool filters, which can be a problem for homeowners. Ampidopds also do not bite.
