Other common name: Pubic louse

Scientific name: Pthirus pubis

Identification:

Egg/Nit: White or yellowish brown in colour and oval in shape. They can be found on pubic hairs and are hard to remove.

Adult:  It is 1.1–1.8 mm in length. It has a short crab-like appearance and looks very different from the head and body lice. They are commonly found in the pubic region and less common elsewhere (armpits, facial hair, chest, eyebrows, and eyelashes).

Diagnosis:

  • Perform a visual examination of the pubic area
  • Presence of crawling lice can confirm an infestation
  • Look for nits on hairs as they can also indicate an infestation
