Identification

Adults are 2.5– 4.5 mm in size and have a mottled appearance due to the short dense hair-like scales present along the wing veins. They do not have strong flight muscles and maneuver mainly by hopping, crawling, or short flights. 

Eggs are no larger than 1.0 mm and are transparent. They are laid in masses of 20–100 and hatch within 2 days. 

Larvae are about 3.0–5.0 mm long and resemble mosquito larvae as they are slender, white to light brown in colour, with a distinct head and well-developed mouthparts. This life stage takes about 15 days to complete. 

Pupae are brown in colour with two respiratory trumpets that look like small horns sticking out of the head part. This stage lasts for about 24–48 hours.
